Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kenwood KM410 Chef Classic 5-Quart Stand MixerCustomer Review: you can not find a better mixer Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, I know, it costs $100 to $150 more than the Kitchen Aid. I have both and I find I use the Kenwood more often. Why? Ease of use is reason number one. The splash/pour shield on the Kenwood is a one piece design that is more effective preventing spills, moves up with the mixer top when you need to add ingredients and has an opening that is easier to load ingrediants through than the Kitchen Aid. It is also more powerful, has a better speed control (a vairable dial instead of detents) and locks in the down position more positively than the Kitchen Aid. It is impossible to overload this thing. I mix pumpkin bread dough in the Kenwood and it doesn't even struggle in the least. The same dough would kill a mere mortal mixer and really makes the Kitchen Aid struggle. I have the Kitchen aid Ultra by way of comparison.Negatives? There are a few: The uncoated aluminum mixer blade is harder to clean than Kitchen Aid (don't even think of putting in the dishwahser) and if you are mixing anything with a high acid content (say containing lemon or tomato)the blades discolor and etch from the acid. The attachments are hard to find and more expensive when you do find them.
Description of Kenwood KM410 Chef Classic 5-Quart Stand MixerIndustrial-strength and extremely versatile, the Kenwood Chef Classic is a boon to bakers and cooks alike. It's ideal for cookie and cake doughs, pizza and bread doughs, and gourmet sauces and desserts, such as chocolate mousse. Three attachments, instructions, and a recipe booklet are included to get you started down the gourmet path. The machine features three additional power outlets for up to 20 attachments. Attachments include a "K-Beater" for making cakes, biscuits, pastry, icing, fillings, eclairs, and mashed potatoes; a whisk, perfect for eggs, cream, batters, meringues, cheesecakes, mousses, and soufflés; and a dough hook, which is handy for heavier mixtures, such as breads, rolls, and pizza dough. The mixer comes with overload protection to keep you from overdoing it. And options are nearly boundless with the wide range of attachments you can add, including citrus juicer, slicer/shredder, ice cream maker, potato peeler, coffee grinder, pasta maker, mincer, and more. If that's not enough, adaptors include a sausage maker, kebbe maker, fine grater, and cookie maker. Be sure not to submerge the power unit in water; it's easy enough to wipe clean with a nonabrasive cloth or sponge. The bowl should be hand-washed to keep the surface glossy, but attachments can go in the dishwasher. --Matthew Evans
